History of the Coast Guard Auxiliary

It can be recalled that it was during the evening cocktails at the Philippine Navy Officer’s Club commemorating the Philippine Navy Day on 09 February 1972 (the old date of  observance), when the Coast a Commandant announced the intention of the Navy Flag Officer-in-Command to form a civilian volunteer unit to assist the Philippine Coast Guard. The officials of the Manila Yacht Club who were present during the cocktails gave their outright support on the said plan with the ensuing events leading to the formation of what was later known as the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA).

The PCGA is a volunteer civilian organization established by the Philippine Coast Guard initially for the purpose of assisting in the conduct of search and rescue as most of its members were owners of boats and yachts. Boat safety has also been a concern intended to be addressed by its creation.

The PCGA eventually expanded and is now a big organization with various activities aimed at assisting the PCG in promoting maritime safety, search and rescue, marine environment protection and preservation, youth development and humanitarian service. It now has 10 operating Districts patterned after the existing PCG set up.
